NCAA Basketball Tournament South Region Scores: #3 Syracuse Orange Roll into Sweet 16 with Win Over #6 Arizona State Sun Devils

Eric Devendorf scored 21 points on 6-15 shooting, Rick Jackson added 13 points and 8 rebounds and Jonny Flynn finished with 11 points and 7 assists as the #3 Syracuse Orange knocked off the #6 Arizona State Sun Devils 78-67 in South Region action on Sunday to advance to the Sweet 16.

Arizona State hung with the Orange for the first part of the opening half and trailed 20-15 before Andy Rautins buried a pair of three-pointers for Syracuse to lift the advantage to 26-15. Syracuse led by as many as 15 in the half but the Sun Devils cut their deficit to single digits by the break, 41-32, on a triple from Rihards Kuksiks and a dunk from Jeff Pendergraph.

The Sun Devils tried to cut into the Orange lead in the second half but each time they put together a couple of buckets Syracuse would answer. With the Orange leading 61-49 with 9:21 left the Sun Devils put together one more run as Ty Abbott hit a pair of three-pointers and James Harden hit a layup as Arizona State climbed to within 61-57 but Rautins stopped the bleeding for Syracuse with a  triple and after Arizona State sank a pair of free-throws Devendorf buried a pair of threes for Syracuse and the lead was up to 70-59 with 4:07 left.

Syracuse shot 55 percent from the floor and hit 9-20 from beyond the three-point line while the Sun Devils shot 40 percent from the floor but struggled from the foul-line sinking just 14-22.
