South Africa Denies Dalai Lama Visa for Peace Conference

South Africa has taken the unusual step of refusing to grant the Dalai Lama a visa to attend a peace conference in Johannesburg tied to the country’s hosting of the 2010 World Cup.

The government has already denied allegations that the decision was due to pressure from China yet Archbishop Desmond Tutu has announced he will no longer attend the meeting that is scheduled later this week.

According to the government the peace conference was scheduled to discuss matters of racism and xenophobia in football and the Dalai Lama’s attendance would shift the focus to Tibet.

It remains to be seen how others expected to attend will react to the government’s decision yet opposition leaders have already branded the government’s decision hypocritical, saying South Africa has not established any consistency in their foreign policy.
