A
small single-engine turboprop airplane crashed into a cemetery in Butte,
Montana on Sunday killing all 14 people on board, seven of those passengers
were said to be children.
According
to witnesses the plane appeared to jerk sharply to the left before nose diving
into the cemetery and igniting. The cemetery, Holy Cross Cemetery, was about
500 feet from the Bert Mooney Airport where the pilot was attempting to land.
Investigators
are still trying to figure out what led the pilot to cancel a scheduled landing
in Bozeman, about 85 miles southeast of Butte. It is unclear if that decision ultimately
led to the crash.
The
plane, a Pilatus PC-12, is said to have a capacity of 12 adults but it was
carrying 14 on board when it went down. Seven of those were said to be children
so it is unclear if the number of passengers played a role.
Conditions
at the time of the crash were believed to be favorable as the pilot had partly
cloudy skies with visibility said to be ten miles with a slight wind from the northwest.
