The
trial for the only known surviving suspect in the deadly Mumbai attacks last November
is now underway.
Appearing
on a video link from a high-security prison Mohammed Ajmal Amir Qasab acknowledged
that he was from Pakistan’s Punjab province and then requested a lawyer at
which point the trial was adjourned until March 30.
Mohammed
Ajmal Amir Qasab, 21, stands accused of murder and “waging war” against India
in relation to the attacks that left more than 170 people dead. He was one of
several attackers, all believed to be members of the Pakistani-based militant
group Lashkar-e-Taiba, who targeted Mumbai’s financial district which included
hotels, restaurants and the rail system.
India
has accused Pakistan of being complicit in the attacks but those allegations
have been strongly denied. Pakistan has admitted that part of the attack was planned
on their soil yet they bore no ties to those plans.
While
the trial is scheduled to take place at the Arthur Road prison where Qasab is
currently being held the security infrastructure is still being put in place
and he will continue to appear through a video link under the measures are
completed.
If
found guilty Qasab could face the death penalty.
