A
senior Palestinian official along with three bodyguards were killed when a
roadside bomb in Lebanon destroyed their vehicle as they were approaching the
Mieh Mieh refugee camp near Sidon.
Kamal
Medhat, deputy head of the PLO in Lebanon, was killed in the blast but many
suspect the target could have been Abbas Zaki, leader of the PLO in Lebanon.
Zaki had actually left the camp earlier than scheduled and was not caught in the
blast.
There
have been no claims of responsibility for the attack but it was being called “a
targeted assassination” by Fahmi Zaarir, an official in Medhat’s Fatah faction.
Medhat
had travelled to the Mieh Mieh camp in an effort to ease the tension following
a shooting over the weekend that killed two Palestinians from different
factions.
