New York Giants Allow Defensive End Osi Umenyiora to Seek Trade

Osi Umenyiora's agent has been given permission by the New York Giants to begins seeking a trade for the Pro Bowl defensive end. Umenyiora is unhappy with his contract and has been meeting with the team to discuss a renegotiation.

In exchange for giving up Umenyiora the Giants want to receive a first-round draft pick. According to court documents Umenyiora was told by the Giants General Manager in 2008 that if he played at a high level for two more years he would get a new contract or a trade to a team that would pay him top tier money for his position.

With two years left on his contract that will pay him $8 million Umenyiora is looking towards the contracts that similar players have signed. Charles Johnson just signed a contract with the Carolina Panthers for six years and $72 million with $30 million included as a signing bonus.

Both parties involved in negotiations seem to be holding their positions with both optimistically hoping that Umenyiora can remain in New York. As with other contract situations around the NFL, notably DeSean Jackson of the Philadelphia Eagles, only time will tell
