SuperCamp's summer enrichment programs will include a Mandarin-language teen summer camp in the U.S. this summer. SuperCamp, which provides learning and life skills training in 10-day residential summer camps held at college campuses, is expanding its offerings this year to include one camp in Mandarin and one in Spanish for high school students.
"Our Mandarin and Spanish camps came about in response to many parents' enquiries over the years," said Bobbi DePorter, SuperCamp president. "Parents were looking for language immersion programs, but also wanted to give their kids our learning and life skills training, so we combined the two."
SuperCamp programs have operated in Latin America and Asia for several years and it is instructors from these programs that will lead the U.S. foreign-language camps in 2009. Both camps will be held June 26 to July 5 at Cal State San Marcos in north county San Diego.
All of SuperCamp's academic summer camps emphasize learning and life skills that help students improve their grades, their confidence and their motivation, as well as their relationships and communication with parents.
Subject matter covers reading effectiveness, creative writing, problem solving, study and test-taking techniques, memory, critical thinking and SAT/ACT prep on the learning skills side. Life skills focus on communication, leadership, conflict resolution, interpersonal skills, and character development, which is based on SuperCamp's 8 Keys of Excellence.
For high school students, SuperCamp serves as a college prep camp, while for middle school students it helps them get ready for high school. The company also offers a summer academic program for students entering and attending college. This program, Quantum U, is held at Colorado College.
Independent studies with over 6,000 SuperCamp graduates have found that after attending SuperCamp 84 percent of graduates increased their self-esteem, 68 percent increased their motivation, 73 percent improved their grades, 81 percent gained confidence and 98 percent continued using one or more skills for at least five years.
