Australian authorities were dealing with a “very serious and sensitive matter” involving an 18-year-old girl and an explosive device Wednesday afternoon at a home in the Sydney suburb of Mosman. The New South Wales police department confirmed bomb-squad officers are inside the girl’s home working to get the situation under control. No other details were released.
"Bomb squad officers remain inside the house where they are examining the device and supporting the woman," the department said in a statement. "The process demands a high level of skill and must be meticulous. The incident is not being treated as self-harm."
"Given the nature of the incident, I am sure you can all appreciate we need to keep the cards very close to our chest,” added New South Wales Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch.
The police department has not confirmed local report media reports saying an unidentified man had strapped a “collar bomb” to the girl’s neck. A note is allegedly attached to the bomb.
