Self-medicating of anxiety disorders increases risk of dependence on substances

Emotional disorders self-treated can lead to abuse

One of the greatest risks associated with the use and misuse of alcohol and other substances is the self-medicating of a physical or mental problem.

Often times, those suffering with such disorders turn to using alcohol casually to lift their spirits or make them feel better physically. Unfortunately, many times those same individuals’ frequency of drinking, or quantity of alcohol consumed, increase over time, and they become dependent on those substances.

“Understanding how anxiety and other emotions can lead to dependency is important,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Many think that self-medicating with drugs or alcohol is an easy way to deal with emotional issues or physical ailments. Initially, it feels like it serves the purpose. However, as time continues and usage increases, an individual can become dependent on the substance and abuse more of it, to the point that it begins to materially affect their life. An effective drug rehab program will address the issues surrounding the dependency and treat the individual. After all, drug and alcohol abuse is a symptom of a greater problem and until the problem is addressed, the alcoholism and drug abuse can’t be conquered.”
