U.S. to Increase Security Along Border with Mexico

The United States government has announced it will step up security measures along the border with Mexico in an effort to stem the violence committed by drug cartels that have spilled over into southwestern states.

As part of the plan an increase of agents from the Department of Homeland Security, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives will be sent to the border.

In addition to the increase in DHS, DEA and ATF agents the government intends to double the size of its Border Enforcement Security Task Force teams as well as create an intelligence group headed by the FBI to deal with Mexican drug cartels.

Funding for the increased security will come from the $700 million already allocated by Congress.

Violence from Mexican drug cartels has been blamed for more than 8,000 deaths over the past two years.
