World Baseball Classic: Japan Tops Korea for Second World Title

Hisashi Iwakuma tossed 7.2 innings allowing just four hits and 2 runs, Seiichi Uchikawa collected three hits in five at-bats and scored a pair of runs and Ichiro Suzuki finished hammered out four hits in six at-bats including a two-run single in the tenth inning that gave Japan a 5-3 win over Korea to win the World Baseball Classic and remain the only country to win the title.

 

Japan jumped on the board first when Michihiro Ogasawara singled off Korean starter Bong Jung-keun to bring home Nakajima in the third inning. Korea would even the score in the bottom of the fifth when Choo Shin-soo homered to dead center off Iwakuma.

 

In the top of the seventh Japan moved back in front after Hiroyuki Nakajima singled home Kataoka and in the eighth Japan grabbed an insurance run when Akinori Iwamura’s sacrifice fly scored Uchikawa to make the score 3-1.

 

Korea managed to plate a run in the bottom of the eighth when Lee Dae-ho's sacrifice fly brought home Lee Bum-ho but Japan still held a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. Yu Darvish came on to finish the game but after putting a pair of baserunners on with walks he surrendered a single to Lee Bum-ho that scored Lee Jong-wook and the game was tied.

 

In the top of the tenth the Japanese team answered once again as Ichiro hit a single straight up the middle to score Uchikawa and Iwamura and then Darvish set the Koreans down in the bottom of the frame to seal the win.

 

Japan and Korea had played each other four times in the 2009 WBC heading into the championship game with each side wining a pair of games.

 

Japan won the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006 when they knocked off Cuba in the championship game.
