Prime
Minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu won a major victory on Tuesday when the center-left
Labour party voted to join a coalition government headed up by the Likud
leader.
Netanyahu
had already secured the backing of the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu and Shas
parties but was in need of support from the moderate Labour party to balance the
coalition.
Labour
leader Ehud Barak has said that a provisional deal was reached yet many inside
his party remain opposed to the move, pointing to Netanyahu’s apparent
unwillingness to continue the peace process with Palestinians.
The
Labour party has long been in favor of holding peace talks with Palestinians
and according to the coalition agreement the new government would continue
negotiations as well as respect deals that have already been put in place.
Barak,
the defense minister in the current government, would likely remain in that
position under the new government. With the support of the Labour party Netanyahu
would have the backing of 66 members of the 120-seat Knesset.
Netanyahu
has until April 3 to form the coalition government and while the Labour party
support would likely pave the way for success he still has not gained the support
from the Kadima party which has said it will remain in opposition.
