Former NFL star Bubba Smith was has died, Los Angeles authorities confirm. Smith, who won the 1971 Super Bowl with the Baltimore Colts, was found dead in his L.A. home on Wednesday. Although the cause of death was not immediately clear, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said it appears to be a “natural death.” Smith was 66.
Smith began his 9-year NFL career in 1967 with the Baltimore Colts. He played with the Colts for 6 years and then signed with the Oakland Raiders. After a year with the Raiders, Smith played with the Houston Oilers for one year.
Smith left professional football in 1976 and launched an acting career. He landed small TV roles and later became known for his role as Moses Hightower in six Police Academy movies. Smith wrote a memoir titled “Kill Bubba, Kill” in 1983.
