Residents in North Dakota are bracing themselves for what
could be the worst flooding of the Red River since 1897. More than 1,000
volunteers have stepped up to help fill sandbags since early Wednesday morning
as residents are trying to protect themselves and their homes from floods that
are expected to reach the area by the end of the week.
“There have been so many volunteers that we had to turn
people away. It’s very busy. They are filling sandbags as fast as they can,”
said a supervisor at one of the volunteer coordinating centers.
Sandbagging centers have been set up in the central arena
at North Dakota State University in Fargo. The sandbags are being used to build
up levees along the Red River, which is one of eight rivers that are at flood
levels.
As of Wednesday morning, the red River was at 33 ft – or 15
feet above the flood stage. Emergency officials say that level could be passed by
Friday. Rain and blizzards have contributed to the swollen rivers.
North Dakota Governor John Hoeven said the state had received
a presidential disaster declaration late Tuesday. Under a presidential disaster
declaration, the federal government will 75 percent of costs created by the
flood.
“We’ve had a severe winter and are experiencing significant
flooding across the state, so we are grateful to receive this federal assistance
as we continue the flood fight and recovery effort,” Hoeven said.
