U.S.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has travelled to Mexico where she will take
part in talks regarding trade and immigration as well as the issue of growing
violence tied to the drug cartels fighting for turf.
Violence
along the U.S.-Mexico border has skyrocketed over the past two years with more
than 8,000 people killed. That violence has been confined to Mexico but the U.S.
has expressed serious concern that the violence will soon spill over into the border
states of the southwest.
Clinton
has not shied away from admitting the U.S.’s part in the plague as she
described America’s “insatiable” demand for illegal drugs as well as its
failure to stop weapons from being smuggled into Mexico. Those weapons are
often used in attacks against police officers, politicians and rival drug
cartels.
President
Barack Obama unveiled a new plan on Tuesday to combat violence and smuggling as
a $700 million security measure was announced that would boost agents along the
border. That measure was designed to not only stop the violence and smuggling
of weapons but curb immigration as well as the flow of drugs into the United
States.
Hillary
Clinton is also expected to ease the tension between the U.S. and Mexico concerning
a trade dispute that began when the U.S. blocked Mexican trucks from U.S.
roads. According to Mexico that decision violated a free-trade agreement that
had existed between the two countries and in response they imposed higher tariffs
on some U.S. exports.
Obama
has said the trade issue would be worked out and a new plan is already in the works
that would resolve the problem.
