Two rare clouded leopards
were born Tuesday at a National Zoo facility in northern Virginia. Zoo
officials say the cubs’ birth is the first there in 16 years.
Breeding the endangered
leopards is a challenge as the male often kills the female. If the female
survives to give birth, she often kills the cubs.
Clouded leopards are native
to Southeast Asia. They are nearly extinct because of hunting and
deforestation. Clouded leopards can weigh up to 50 points and measure 3 to 6
feet. Their tails account for half of their length.
The cats get their name from
their tan or tawny coat that this marked with large, irregularly shaped,
dark-edged ellipses that often look similar to clouds.
