The NCAA basketball tournament heads into Sweet 16 action with the South Region getting underway on Friday as the top four seeds, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Syracuse and Gonzaga take the court, all fighting for a trip to the Elite Eight and a shot at a national championship.
In game one of the South Region Sweet 16 action the #2-seed Oklahoma Sooners will take on the #3-seed Syracuse Orange at 7:27 p.m. ET in Memphis, TN. The Sooners have jumped on the back of Blake Griffin to get through the first two rounds against Morgan State and Michigan but that may be a bit more difficult on Friday as they face a defensive unit in Syracuse that will almost certainly collapse on the sophomore forward. Syracuse got past Stephen F. Austin and Arizona State with solid guard play and if Jonny Flynn and Eric Devendorf continue their solid play they will be tough to beat.
The #1-seed North Carolina Tar Heels will take on the #4-seed Gonzaga Bulldogs in the second game from Memphis with tip-off set for 9:57 p.m. ET. UNC blasted Radford in their opener and then took care of LSU after welcoming back guard Ty Lawson and it could be Lawson who holds the key to a national title for the Tar Heels. While Tyler Hansbrough and Wayne Ellington have been solid all year it has been Lawson who has been the sparkplug. Gonzaga has won 11 straight games but they haven’t exactly breezed through their first two rounds as they edged Akron and then needed a last second bucket to beat Western Kentucky. Their size could be a problem for the Tar Heels but if they fall behind early they’d have a hard time catching up against a veteran squad.
