The
NCAA basketball tournament is now in its Sweet 16 stage and the Midwest Region is
the lone bracket that still has a school seeded higher than five as the Arizona
Wildcats have evolved from a controversial selection for the tournament to the last
Pac-10 team standing. Arizona’s success means little to Louisville, Michigan
State or Kansas as they all want a national title banner hanging in their gym
as well.
The
Louisville Cardinals were awarded the overall #1-seed in the NCAA tournament and
while they face the #12-seed Arizona Wildcats they won’t be taking anything for
granted after a tough second round game against Siena. The Cardinals have won
13 straight games with four of those coming against Big East teams who made the
NCAA tournament. Arizona had dropped five of six games heading into the NCAA
tournament but then beat up #5-seed Utah before dropping Cleveland State in the
field of 32. Louisville and Arizona will tip-off at 7:07 p.m. ET from
Indianapolis, IN.
In
game two of the West Region Sweet 16 matchup the #2-seed Michigan State
Spartans will take on the #3-seed Kansas Jayhawks at 9:37 p.m. ET in
Indianapolis, IN. The Spartans had little trouble in their first round game
against Robert Morris but were tested by the USC Trojans in the second round.
Michigan State also holds the advantage of already beating Kansas this year,
when the two teams met in January the Spartans won by 13 points. The Jayhawks faced
a tough North Dakota State in the first round but then took care of Dayton in the
second.
