A
pair of European-owned tankers have been seized by pirates off the coast of
Somalia in the Gulf of Aden.
On
Wednesday the Greek-owned Nipayia, a chemical tanker, was overtaken by pirates
about 450 miles from the southern Somali port of Kismayo. Pirates are now holding
the 19 crew members hostage. The Norwegian-owned Bow Asir, also believed to be
a chemical tanker, was seized on Thursday with all 27 crew members now being
held by pirates.
The
Gulf of Aden is patrolled by warships from several nations as a means of deterring
pirate attacks yet the hijackings remain a major problem for tankers, merchant
ships, liners and yachts attempting to sail the waterways off the Somali coast.
