NCAA Basketball Sweet 16 West Region Scores: #1 Connecticut Huskies March into Elite Eight with Win Over #5 Purdue Boilermakers

Hasheem Thabeet scored 15 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked 4 shots, A.J. Priced scored 15 points and dished out 7 assists, Stanley Robinson chipped in 10 points and pulled down 11 boards and Craig Austrie poured in 17 points as the #1 Connecticut Huskies knocked off the #5 Purdue Boilermakers 72-60 on Thursday night to advance to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament.

Connecticut jumped on Purdue early as they built a 14-3 advantage but the Boilermakers managed to climb back and after E'Twaun Moore buried a three-pointer and Nemanja Calasan sank a layup they were within 20-16. The Huskies quickly pushed their advantage back to ten only to see the Boilermakers make another run as Robbie Hummel sank a triple to get Purdue to within 26-23 with 3:47 left in the half. Purdue stayed within three until A.J. Price hit a layup late to give the Huskies a 30-25 lead at the break.

Purdue once again closed their deficit to three early in the second half but the Huskies rattled off eight straight points to build a 42-31 advantage and it looked like UConn would roll the rest of the way. The Boilermakers responded though and went on a 7-0 run to get back into the game only to see the Huskies go on an 8-2 spurt to push the lead back to ten with 9:09 left in the game.

The Boilermakers were never able to get any closer than eight the rest of the way as the Huskies took care of business at the foul-line to preserve the win and advance to the Elite Eight. They will now face the winner of the Memphis Tigers and Missouri Tigers game.
