NCAA Basketball Sweet 16 East Region Scores: #1 Pittsburgh Panthers Hold Off #4 Xavier Musketeers to Reach Elite Eight

DeJuan Blair scored 10 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, Sam Young added 19 points and LeVance Fields dished out 6 assists and finished with 14 points including five in the final minute to give the #1 Pittsburgh Panthers a 60-55 victory over the #4 Xavier Musketeers to advance to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament.

While the Panthers earned the number one seed in the East Region the Musketeers showed no signs of being intimidated as they used a 13-3 run in the first half to overcome a four-point deficit and take a 25-19 lead with 5:54 left on the clock. Pittsburgh then scored the next six points to even the game at 25-25 but Xavier closed the half on a 12-4 run to carry a 37-29 lead into the break.

The second half appeared to start with Xavier still in their locker room as they didn’t score a point for more than six minutes and Connecticut erased their deficit and took a 38-37 advantage. The Musketeers finally got things going and when Derrick Brown hit a jumper with 6:45 left on the clock Xavier held a 47-46 lead and the game would go back and forth the rest of the way. Pittsburgh ran off six straight points to go up five only to see Xavier go on a 7-0 run to move in front 54-52 with 1:52 left in the game.

With 56 seconds left on the clock LeVance Fields buried a three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Panthers a 55-54 lead and then Fields scored on a Xavier turnover to push the lead to 57-54 with 27 seconds left. Terrell Holloway pulled the Musketeers to within 57-55 after hitting one of two from the foul-line but then Sam Young gave Pittsburgh a 59-55 lead after sinking two from the line with 13 seconds and Xavier had no answer.

Pittsburgh will now play the winner of the Duke Blue Devils and Villanova Wildcats game.
