NCAA Basketball Sweet 16 West Region Scores: #3 Missouri Tigers Stun #2 Memphis Tigers, Advance to Elite Eight

J.T. Tiller scored 23 points, Leo Lyons added 15 points and 13 rebounds and DeMarre Carroll finished with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assist as the #3 Missouri Tigers jumped to a big first half lead and never let up in their 102-91 victory over the #2 Memphis Tigers. The win now places the Missouri Tigers in the Elite Eight where they will face the #1 Connecticut Huskies.

Memphis looked solid for most of the first half as they were getting easy buckets in the paint and that opened up shots on the perimeter as they and when Roburt Sallie hit a three-pointer with 9:33 left in the half the Tigers were in front 25-21. Missouri answered though as Tiller buried a triple and then hit a jumper for a brief 26-25 lead. Sallie put Memphis back in front with a three-pointer but their 28-26 advantage would be the last time they had a lead as Missouri went on an 11-1 run to take control 37-29. Memphis closed to within four but Missouri closed the half on a 12-3 run to carry a 49-36 lead into the break.

The second half wasn’t any better for Memphis as Missouri quickly buried them with a 15-4 run to push their advantage to 64-40. Memphis managed to regroup and went on an 11-0 spurt to climb back to within 64-51 but Missouri wouldn’t fold and after Kim English sank a pair of free-throws with 9:24 left in the game their lead was 78-62.

Missouri was up by 15 points with 7:40 left when Memphis made their push with an 8-0 run to climb back to within 83-76 and were able to get as close as six following Shawn Taggart’s dunk with a 2:15 left on the clock but Missouri sank their free-throws when they mattered and locked up a berth in the Elite Eight.

Memphis shot an awful 18-32 from the foul-line while Missouri got to the line 45 times and sank 30. Robert Dozier led Memphis with 19 points and 16 rebounds while Tyreke Evans added 33 points.
