A polar bear attacked a group of tourists early Friday in remote Norway, mauling one person to death and seriously wounding four others. According to authorities, all five men involved in the attack were on a camping trip with the British Schools Exploring Society. The group of around 80 men was near the remote Von Postbreen glacier in Svalbard district when the attack occurred.
The British Schools Exploring Society identified the injured as Michael Reid, Andrew Ruck, Patrick Flinders and Scott Smith. Reid and Ruck were trip leaders. The name of the person killed was not released.
A spokeswoman for the Scalbard governor’s office said the injured are being airlifted to Tromsoe. The polar bear was shot by someone in the camping group, the spokeswoman added. Authorities are investigating the attack.
