Suicide Bombing at Pakistani Mosque Kills at least 48, Death Toll Expected to Climb

A suicide bomber detonated an explosive at a mosque in northwest Pakistan on Friday killing at least 48 people and leaving more than 70 injured.

The early morning attack occurred near the town of Jamrud, about 20 miles from the Afghan border, just as prayers were beginning. Search crews have been forced to dig through the rubble of the collapsed mosque and believe the death toll could nearly double before the search is over.

While nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack the Taliban has frequently used suicide bombings in the northwest territory to assert their presence.

Pakistan has increased its security forces in the northwest area as a means of fighting militants who have been attacking NATO forces crossing into Afghanistan.
