Zimbabwe’s
Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has openly challenged a land reform policy put
in place by President Robert Mugabe, calling the practice of government
sponsored land seizures “acts of theft” and promising to arrest those who take
part in the invasions.
Tsvangirai
was speaking before a group of diplomats, civic society and business leaders
when he challenged the land seizures saying, “This government is aware that most
of the ongoing disruptions of agricultural production, which are being done in
the name of the land reform process, are actually acts of theft.”
The
PM went on to say, “Those continuing to undertake these activities will be
arrested and face justice in the courts.”
Mugabe
has long stood by his land reform initiative which has advocated the seizure of
white-owned farms and he has vowed to continue the initiative despite
challenges from not only Tsvangirai but the Southern African Development
Community as well.
Tsvangirai
has blamed the land reform policy for destroying Zimbabwe’s economy as much of the
seized land has gone unused and the country faces continued food shortages.
