Five
Britons held captive for nearly two years in Iraq may be close to gaining their
freedom as a deal has reportedly been reached with the kidnappers.
According
to a report in The Guardian the kidnappers,
a Shia group known as Leagues of the Righteous, agreed to release one hostage for
every ten Sadrist militants currently detained.
The
deal was said to involve Britain as well as the U.S. which will allegedly
release several militants currently held in Iraq.
All
five British hostages have been held since May 2007 after nearly 40 gunmen
stormed Baghdad’s Finance Ministry. Talks to secure their release had stalled
over time but it is believed the militant group wanted the situation over and
agreed to the most recent terms, said to have been brokered by Iraqis.
While
a deal has reportedly been reached there has been no confirmation from the UK
or the U.S. and if an agreement is in place it could still take weeks for the hostages
to actually be released.
