A
dam burst in Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta has killed at least 58 people
and several more remain missing as mud and rain continue to hamper rescue
efforts.
Heavy
rains in Jakarta resulted in an overflow of the Situ Gintung lake which in turn
caused the dam to bust, sending a wall of water up to 13-feet high through the
suburb of Cirendeu in the Tangerang district. Homes were swallowed whole as
residents struggled to reach higher ground but many were caught sleeping when the
flash flood struck around 2:00 a.m. local time.
While
58 bodies have been recovered officials have sent 150 body bags to the scene
and that may not be enough as search crews continue to pull bodies from the heavy
mud that trapped many of the residents.
The
Situ Gintung dam was made of compacted earth that stood 52-feet high and was
built in the 1933 by Dutch colonial authorities.
