Extreme Skier Shane McConkey Killed in Cliff Jump During Filming of Movie

Shane McConkey, an extreme skier sponsored by Red Bull, was killed on Thursday while he was attempting a Ski-BASE jump in Italy.  

McConkey was being filmed for a movie when he made the Ski-BASE jump in Corvara and according to Red Bull he encountered a mid-air malfunction. The 39-year-old extreme skier was believed to be attempting to jump the cliff and then deploy a parachute but when one of his skies failed to release he was sent into an uncontrolled free-fall that made it impossible to release the parachute.

Considered one of the pioneers of extreme skiing and Ski-BASE jumping McConkey had founded the International Free Skiing Association and organized several BASE jumping competitions.
