My name is Lisa Solomon, co-host of The Solomon Free Money Hour. I found out my son had autism before he was three years old. I did not know anything about autism, nor did I know the signs. The only thing I knew was that he was not speaking the same as his peers nor was he reaching his milestones
To my surprise, I had many free resources to get help for my son and to help me learn a new world of knowledge.
There is no “look” to autism, my sister who is a nurse told me. More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with diabetes, cancer and AIDS combined!
In the beginning people were telling me, “I’m sorry, Lisa” or “he will come out of it.” He won’t. And I’m not sorry. I would not trade my little smart, handsome, funny and affectionate guy for anyone.
People ask me often, what is autism? Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges.
I can also tell you that if it was not for me being proactive and getting him help along with the right tools and early intervention– he would not be as advanced as he is today. This is 100% the reason my son, Trey has defied many odds and appears so typical.
While the prevalence of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade, we still need to raise awareness. If you know a loved one that may have autism, please go to www.worldautismawarenessday.org, http://www.talkaboutcuringautism.org/index.htm or my personal site: http://www.lisasolomon.net/.
