Nationally Recognized Law Firm Investigates Denture Cream Zinc Poisoning Cases

Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a New York law firm nationally recognized for its consumer protection and mass tort practices, is currently investigating cases of zinc poisoning, neuropathy and other serious side effects associated with denture cream use.  The firm’s consumer advocacy website, www.ConsumerInjuryLawyers.com, contains an informational portal about denture cream zinc poisoning.

In August 2008, a study published in the journal “Neurology” reported on four denture-wearing patients suffering from neuropathy and other neurological side effects. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, concluded that zinc contained in denture creams could have been responsible for the patients’ symptoms. Notably, while one tube of denture cream should last 3 to 10 weeks, patients in the denture cream study were all using at least two tubes of denture cream a week.

Many popular denture adhesive creams, such as Fixodent and Poligrip, contain the mineral zinc. Although a small amount of zinc is necessary for a healthy and balanced diet, zinc is poisonous when ingested in large amounts. Severe zinc poisoning can lead to neurological problems, such as neuropathy, and even death.

Because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) currently does not require denture cream manufacturers to list their ingredients and potential side effects, many of the more than 35 million Americans who wear dentures are unaware of the link between denture creams, zinc toxicity and neuropathy. Consequently, several denture cream lawsuits have emerged alleging, among other things, that the manufacturers of denture creams should be held accountable for failing to warn consumers of the risk of serious side effects with their products. According to news sources, at least one Poligrip Lawsuit has already settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

If you or a loved one uses Fixodent, Super-Poligrip, or another brand of denture cream and suffers from symptoms of zinc poisoning or neuropathy, you could be entitled to file a denture cream lawsuit seeking compensation for your medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and more. The experienced denture cream lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard are currently offering free and confidential consultations to anyone interested in pursuing a denture cream claim.
