Thousands Forced to Evacuate in North Dakota as Red River Reaches Highest Level in 112 Years

With the entire state of North Dakota already receiving a federal disaster declaration and parts of neighboring Minnesota under the same designation thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes as flood waters continue to climb.

Residents in Fargo and Moorehead, North Dakota have had to abandon their homes as the Red River continues to spill over, reaching its highest level in 112 years and it isn’t expected to peak until Sunday.

President Barack Obama has pledged to provide the necessary federal aid to bring relief to residents as well as protect as much property as possible.

Efforts to halt the rising waters has been hampered by heavy snowfall and ice jams in the Red River which have made it difficult for the river to flow and efforts are now underway to break up those ice jams with explosives.

Forecasters have predicted more snow for the Red River valley and expect rains next week to make the flooding worse.
