Anti-Government Rally in Madagascar Turns Violent, More than 30 Injured in Clashes with Police

A clash between anti-government protestors and police in Madagascar has left more than 30 injured, several suffering gunshot wounds, as the country continues to teeter on the brink of complete chaos following an army-backed coup last week.

Supporters of the ousted President Marc Ravalomanana rallied in the capital city Antananarivo for the sixth straight day calling for the removal of new leader Andry Rajoelina. On Saturday those supporters were met with tear gas and in some cases gunfire.

While Rajoelina has the backing of the military his leadership has not been recognized by the international community as the African Union has already suspended the country and the United States and European Union have refused political ties with the country.

Ravalomanana resigned earlier this month following pressure from the military but has since stated he was forced out of power by a coup.

Since taking power Rajoelina has offered to hold reconciliation talks with Ravalomanana but the former leader and his party have not made it clear that they would participate in any talks.
