Hamid Karzai to Remain in Office Until Afghanistan Holds Elections

Afghanistan’s Supreme Court has ruled that President Hamid Karzai will remain in office until the country holds its elections and a new leader is selected later this year.

Originally the country was to hold elections next month with Karzai’s term scheduled to end on May 21 but those elections have been pushed back to August while security measures are put in place to ensure fair process.

There had been those who wanted Karzai to lace office on his scheduled date but that would have left the presidential office vacant and in direct violation of the country’s constitution.

In their ruling the Supreme Court stated, “The continuation of the president and his deputies is in the interests of the people of Afghanistan.”
