Former Atlanta mega-church leader Archbishop Earl Paulk died early Sunday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer. Paulk had been admitted to the Atlanta Medical Center and died in the hospital, he was 81.
Paulk helped co-found the Cathedral at Chapel Hill in Decatur, Ga. and oversaw its rise in stature to a membership that exceeded 10,000 in the early 1990s. Things began to unravel for the church and for Paulk when a former female employee charged him with sexual misconduct which opened the door for several more allegations from other women.
Paulk initially denied the charges in court but in 2008 he admitted to lying under oath and confirmed the numerous affairs.
The legal problems that Paulk, as well as several other leaders within the church, encountered dramatically affected its membership and by 2007 there were less than 1,500.
