U.S. Says it Won’t Attempt to Intercept North Korean Rocket

Rhetoric surrounding an alleged missile test by North Korea has calmed a bit following an announcement from U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates in which he stated there would be no attempt on the part of the U.S. to intercept the missile.

North Korea has insisted the rocket launch is intended to send a satellite into orbit while the U.S., South Korea and Japan have accused the country of plans to test-fire a long-range ballistic missile. There have been several warnings issued to North Korea about the proposed launch and threats to shoot the rocket down but the U.S. has apparently stepped back from those threats.

On Sunday Gates told Fox News, “I would say we're not prepared to do anything about it.” The Defense Secretary went on to say, “If we had an aberrant missile, one that looked like it was headed for Hawaii, we might consider it, but I don't think we have any plans to do anything like that at this point.”

While the U.S. has said they would not interfere with the launch Japan has already stated their intention to shoot down anything that may fall on its territory.

North Korea has announced the launch would take place between April 4 and 8 and any attempt to intercept the rocket would be regarded as an act of war.
