President Barack Obama has pledged to consult Pakistani leaders prior to any U.S. strike on militants in their country.
Obama was speaking on CBS television’s Face the Nation on Sunday when he stated “If we have a high-value target within our sights, after consulting with Pakistan, we're going after them.” The announcement comes as Pakistan continues to express criticism over the use of unmanned drones used by the U.S. to carry out attacks.
The announcement from Obama comes just days after the U.S. military expressed concerns that many inside Pakistan’s military intelligence have links to al-Qaeda militants along the Afghanistan and India borders.
Despite those concerns Obama stated, “We need to work with them and through them to deal with al-Qaeda. But we have to hold them much more accountable.” Pakistan has criticized the U.S. in the past for violating their sovereignty by carrying out attacks without consulting them first.
The U.S. has carried out numerous attacks along the Pakistani-Afghan border as al-Qaeda and Taliban militants have used the region as a base for many of their operations.
