The plot is simple Peter Klaven is engaged to his popular fiancé Zooey who has plenty of girl friends. Peter Klaven is a moderately successful Realtor in Los Angeles (obviously this was filmed prior to the Real Estate bubble exploding). Rudd now is faced with having to find a best man along with his groomsman to stand up with him during his wedding. Zooey has plenty of bridesmaids and the story begins.
Paul Rudd plays his part extremely well making things uncomfortable as you watch the film. From his air guitar imitating Rush the messages he leaves on Sidney Fife’s (Jason Segal) answering machine. Klavin tries so hard to be cool around the boys he is trying to recruit to be his friends. Klavin’s attempts to make friends lead to a gay man kissing him on a date, him puking all over Favreau’s and his buddy Sidney getting into a fight with Lou Ferrigno The Incredible Hulk on Venice Beach.
Adam Sandberg plays Rudd’s brother Robbie an out of the closet gay personal trainer. Robbie attempts to help his brother Peter become cool so he can hang out with the bros but Peter continues to fall short with one exception his new friend Sidney Fife an investor and a man who also loves Rush and playing music, watching movies and allowing his dog to relieve himself on the beaches of Venice without cleaning it up. Pete and Sidney become buddies until Sidney goes too far for Peter to tolerate his behavior any longer. Peter cuts off the friendship and is left without a best man.
The film brings laughter; uncomfortable moments watching
Rudd’s character make a debacle of himself. Paul Rudd plays Pete Klavin extremely
well as does Segal with his role Sidney Fife. The supporting cast of Favreau, Pressly, Sandberg, Rowlins all deliver.
Zooey (Rashida Jones) is a loving girlfriend who begins to see how geeky Peter is and takes action as Peter gets a bit too chummy with Sidney.
The scene at the Chinese Restaurant is well written while Jason Segal’s character is never really developed. We don’t know much about him other than we can conclude he is very much like Peter Klavin a man with few friends but he differs from Peter in pretending he is comfortable in his own skin.
I love You Man is enjoyable, funny innocent film. The cast delivers even with some slim errors in the script.
I Love You Man is a bromance comedy that comes in with 3 out of 4 stars.
Paul Rudd you were one weird guy in this film. Thumbs up to
you.
