North Carolina Nursing Home Shooting Ties Gunman to Employee

The gunman who entered the Pinelake Health and Rehab Center in Carthage, North Carolina and killed seven residents and one staff member may have done so because his estranged wife worked at the nursing home.

Police are now investigating the link between Robert Stewart, 45, and a nurse who worked at the facility.

According to reports Stewart entered the Pinkelake Health and Rehab Center around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday and began his shooting rampage. Officials have said the death toll could have been much higher had it not been for the actions of 25-year-old policeman Justin Garner who arrived on the scene and was able to wound Stewart and halt the shooting spree.

Garner was himself shot in the leg and was taken to a local hospital as was Stewart and the injured residents.

Stewart is expected to be charged with eight murders.
