Fans Blamed for Stadium Stampede That Left 19 Dead and 132 Injured in Ivory Coast

The stadium stampede that left 19 people dead and at least 132 injured in the Ivory Coast is being blamed on ticketless fans who were trying to force their way into the venue to watch a World Cup qualifier between the Ivory Coast and Malawi.

Officials have said police had attempted to prevent those fans from entering the stadium but a wall collapsed sending a wave of fans into the stadium and leading to a massive crush inside the Houphouet-Boigny arena in Abidjan.

Prior to the match the country’s national football association had warned fans without tickets to stay away from the stadium but those fans ignored the warnings and arrived in huge numbers. According to some reports there had been more people outside the stadium than inside the 35,000-seat venue.
