Oklahoma
Sooners forward Blake Griffin was the only unanimous selection to the 2009 NCAA
basketball All America squad as the sophomore collected 71 first-team votes for
a total of 335 points. Griffin led his Sooners squad to an Elite Eight
appearance after averaging 21 points and 14.3 rebounds per game.
Griffin’s
Oklahoma team was knocked out of the NCAA tournament by the North Carolina Tar
Heels and it was their senior forward Tyler Hansbrough that earned All America
status for the second straight year after averaging 20.9 points per contest and
8.1 rebounds. Hansbrough picked up 50 first-team votes for a total of 304
points.
The
Pittsburgh Panthers landed their first first-team All America player in more
than 50 years as DeJuan Blair nabbed the honor after averaging 15.6 points and
12.2 rebounds per game. The sophomore forward collected 294 points to land just
behind Hansbrough in the voting.
While
the Panthers placed just their second player in school history on the All America
squad the Arizona State Sun Devils earned their first as James Harden grabbed the
honors after averaging 20.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game to receive 290
points in the voting. The sophomore had already captured Pac-10 player of the year
honors.
Rounding
out the All America squad was Davidson’s junior sharp-shooter Stephen Curry who
averaged 28.6 points, tops in the nation, and 5.7 assists per game for the Wildcats.
Curry collected 288 votes to become Davidson’s second first-team All America.
Making
up the second-team All America squad were Connecticut’s Hashem Thabeet, Notre
Dame’s Luke Harangody, North Carolina’s Ty Lawson, Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks and
Marquette’s Jerel McNeal. The third-team All America squad was made up of Louisville’s
Terrence Williams, Florid State’s Toney Douglas, Pittsburgh’s Sam Young, Kansas’
Sherron Collins and Duke’s Gerald Henderson.
