NCAA Basketball All America First Team Announced, Blake Griffin Unanimous Selection, Hansbrough, Blair, Harden and Curry Make the Cut

Oklahoma Sooners forward Blake Griffin was the only unanimous selection to the 2009 NCAA basketball All America squad as the sophomore collected 71 first-team votes for a total of 335 points. Griffin led his Sooners squad to an Elite Eight appearance after averaging 21 points and 14.3 rebounds per game.

Griffin’s Oklahoma team was knocked out of the NCAA tournament by the North Carolina Tar Heels and it was their senior forward Tyler Hansbrough that earned All America status for the second straight year after averaging 20.9 points per contest and 8.1 rebounds. Hansbrough picked up 50 first-team votes for a total of 304 points.

The Pittsburgh Panthers landed their first first-team All America player in more than 50 years as DeJuan Blair nabbed the honor after averaging 15.6 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. The sophomore forward collected 294 points to land just behind Hansbrough in the voting.

While the Panthers placed just their second player in school history on the All America squad the Arizona State Sun Devils earned their first as James Harden grabbed the honors after averaging 20.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game to receive 290 points in the voting. The sophomore had already captured Pac-10 player of the year honors.

Rounding out the All America squad was Davidson’s junior sharp-shooter Stephen Curry who averaged 28.6 points, tops in the nation, and 5.7 assists per game for the Wildcats. Curry collected 288 votes to become Davidson’s second first-team All America.

Making up the second-team All America squad were Connecticut’s Hashem Thabeet, Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody, North Carolina’s Ty Lawson, Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks and Marquette’s Jerel McNeal. The third-team All America squad was made up of Louisville’s Terrence Williams, Florid State’s Toney Douglas, Pittsburgh’s Sam Young, Kansas’ Sherron Collins and Duke’s Gerald Henderson.
