Benjamin
Netanyahu is set to be sworn in as Israel’s new prime minister on Tuesday as he
presents his cabinet to parliament for a vote this afternoon.
Netanyahu,
leader of the right-wing Likud party, was tapped by Israeli President Shimon
Peres earlier this year to head up a new government and while he was unable to
bring the left-leaning Kadima party into his coalition he managed to attract
the more moderate Labour party as well as several right-wing parties.
It
has been ten years since Netanyahu held the office of prime minister and his
latest term will likely concentrate on a familiar issue, Israel’s relationship
with Palestinians and its Arab neighbors. Among the biggest concerns is Iran’s
push to develop a nuclear program.
Fears
have already surfaced concerning the position Israel will take in regards to
Palestine as Netanyahu has never favored negotiating with Palestinians or
recognizing a Palestinian state.
Despite
winning the most seats in February’s elections the Kadima party, led by
outgoing Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, was passed over by Peres when he
selected Netanyahu as Prime Minister-designate. Peres expressed doubt over
Kadima’s ability to form a coalition and now Livni has vowed to establish an
opposition voice to the new government.
Hard-liner
Avigdor Lieberman will replace Livni as foreign minister while Labour lader
Ehud Barak will become minister of defense.
