A
boat carrying several hundred migrants has sunk off the coast of Libya and now
officials fear more than 200 have drowned as only 23 have been rescued.
The
boat, carrying around 250 African migrants, was hit by rough seas and high
winds about 30 miles north of Libya when it capsized. Search and rescue crews
were sent to the scene shortly after the incident and were able to bring to
safety a second boat that was carrying around 350 migrants.
According
to the International Organization of Migration the migrants had been attempting
to reach Italy, a popular destination for those seeking relief from persecution,
poverty and conflict. As a result Italy has agreed to start joint sea
operations with Libya in an attempt to halt the dangerous practice.
The
IOM has said more than 31,000 migrants have crossed from Libya to the Italian
island of Lampedusa in 2008, yet thousands more have attempted and never
reached the shores.
