The
NIT will have its final two teams standing by the end of the night and one of
those teams will be either the Notre Dame Fighting Irish or the Penn State Nittany
Lions as the two teams square off in New York’s Madison Square Garden on
Tuesday evening.
Notre
Dame started the season with high expectations and were ranked in the Top 10
for some time but a seven game slide midway through the season derailed their
hopes and then late season losses to Connecticut and Villanova sealed their
fate. The Irish, led by second-team All America Luke Harangody, have played all
three of their NIT games at home, knocking off UAB, New Mexico and Kentucky to
reach the semis.
Penn
State was snubbed by the NCAA tournament despite picking up wins over Michigan
State, Purdue (twice) and Illinois and the Nittany Lions almost proved the committee
right in their first round match-up in the NIT when they needed overtime to
beat George Mason. They have since knocked off Rhode Island and Florida to
reach the semis and will now face their biggest challenge in Notre Dame.
Tip
off for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Penn State Nittany Lions is set for
9:00 p.m. ET.
