U.S.
President Barack Obama has arrived in London ahead of the G20 summit scheduled
to begin on Thursday. Prior to the summit’s start Obama is scheduled to hold
talks with UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, meet with opposition leader David
Cameron as well as the Queen.
Tuesday’s
arrival marks the first major trip Obama has undertaken since being sworn in as
44th President of the United States in January. While the focus of
his trip will be on the G20 summit and more specifically the outlining of
tougher regulations for the global financial market Obama will also be meeting
with several world leaders in a series of bi-lateral talks.
Obama
appears to have the support of Brown concerning the approach to the financial
crisis that has devastated the economies of several countries but they could be
facing mounting opposition from other European countries who have questioned the
logic of continued spending implemented by the United States.
Sharp
criticism has been hurled at Obama for his insistence that Europe continue to push
spending initiatives as a means of stimulating the global economy. One of Obama’s
sharpest critics has been French President Nicolas Sarkozy who is said to be
prepared to walk away from the summit if stronger financial regulations aren’t
part of the solution. Neither Obama nor brown have been in favor of such a
measure.
Despite
their differences Obama and Sarkozy are scheduled to meet on Friday as the U.S.
president travels to Strasbourg following the summit’s conclusion. Obama will
then head to Germany to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel before
returning to Strasbourg for a NATO summit on Saturday. On Sunday Obama will
attend an EU-U.S. summit in Prague. He will then travel to the Turkish capital
of Ankara before heading back to the U.S. on Monday.
