Mass Grave From 1870s Yellow Fever Epidemic Found in Alabama

Alabama authorities believe a mass grave found in downtown Montgomery contains the bodies of victims of the Yellow Fever epidemic in the 1870s.

The grave was found by maintenance workers grading a piece of land where two buildings from the 1940s had been torn down. The site is adjacent to a cemetery.

Montgomery police spokesman Maj. Huey Thornton said “based on the information we have from historical documents kept by the actual cemetery…it does appear that it may be remains from a yellow fever epidemic in the 1870s.

The Alabama Archaeological Society and the Alabama Historical Association are expected to be able to confirm the theory. Its unclear how many bodies are buried at the site. Thornton reassures Montgomery residents that the remains are too old to suggest any recent foul play.
