Israel’s New Foreign Minister Rejects 2007 Agreement to Reach Peace Deal with Palestinians

One day into his new position as Israel’s foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman has already made his presence felt as the ultra-nationalist quickly dismissed the U.S.-sponsored 2007 Annapolis conference which outlined an agreement to reach a peace deal with Palestinians.

Lieberman said the agreement had no validity and that the only agreement that carried any weight was the 2003 Road Map agreement. While the Annapolis conference called for further discussions outlining the creation of an independent Palestinian state the Israeli government never ratified the agreement.

On Tuesday those discussions all but died as right-wing Likud party leader Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in as Israel’s new Prime Minister. Netanyahu replaced Kadima party leader and former foreign minister Tzipi Livni, a proponent of peace talks with Palestinians, with Lieberman who has been an outspoken critic of such talks.
