At
least eight people have been confirmed dead and eight more remain missing after
the helicopter they were traveling in crashed into the North Sea off Scotland’s
Aberdeenshire coast.
The
Bond Super Puma was carrying 14 passengers and two crew members when it went
down as it was returning from an oil rig northeast of Aberdeen. The Aberdeen
Coastguard immediately sent out a search and rescue crew to the area which
included a pair of RAF rescue helicopters as well as a Nimrod marine patrol
aircraft.
Two
life rafts were spotted in the area where the crash occurred but they were
overturned. All on board were said to be wearing “proper immersion suits” which
would protect them from the cold waters but that may only last a few hours.
