The most widely publicized Worm attack since the Y2K scare came to a screeching halt as the global manhunt for the Conficker Worm Hackers resulted in the arrests of three teen-age ex-software developers.
The Conficker Worm grabbed headlines, and an estimated 10 million computers, in its quest of infecting the entire World Wide Web.
The Conficker Worm, also known as Downup, Downadup and Kido, is a computer worm that surfaced in October 2008 and targets the Microsoft Windows operating system. The worm exploits a previously patched vulnerability in the Windows Server service used by Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 Beta, and Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta. The worm has been unusually difficult for network operators and law enforcement to counter because of its combined use of advanced malware techniques.
Authorities from three nations stormed the basement apartment of three teenage hackers. What they found was appalling.
“These kids are all Methamphetamine addicts,” commented E. Ness, of Scotland Yard. “They didn’t leave their basement apartment. They worked continuously on new variations of this dangerous Internet Worm, not bothering to sleep or eat. It was appalling.
“The world can breathe easier as the teenagers are now behind bars. April Fool’s Day was the perfect day to catch these fools.”
The teens, whose names have been withheld, are now being processed for extradition and drug rehab.
“On a serious note, while computer viruses and worms are a serious threat to society, the real threat to today’s society is drug abuse and drug addiction,” comments Gordy Weinand, Public Relations Director for Narconon Drug Rehab of Georgia. “While a computer virus or worm can take down a computer, a network, or an internet site, drug addiction ruins people’s lives. Had these youths had an effective drug rehab program, none of this would have started.”
