Red Sox Defeat Yankees in 10 Innings for AL East Lead
The Boston Red Sox took ten innings to beat the New York Yankees at Fenway Park Sunday night on a walk off hit by Josh Reddick. The win gave the Sox sole possession of the top spot in the AL East, a game ahead of their rival and opponent, and clinched the season series victory.
Going into the bottom of the ninth inning the game was not looking good for the Red Sox. Down 2-1 courtesy of two Yankee homeruns the Sox were facing Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera needing at least a run to tie.
A lead off double by Marco Scutaro put a runner on the bases and a sacrifice bunt moved him to third. After a sacrifice fly allowed Scutaro to score the game was forced into extra innings and Rivera had his fifth blown save of the season.
In the tenth David Ortiz bounced a ball over the wall in right field for a double and was replaced by Darnell McDonald. The Yankees pitched around Carl Crawford and the first pitch Reddick saw he hit to the left field corner, scoring McDonald from second.
The game gave the Red Sox a 10-2 series lead against New York on the season with only six games left to play between the clubs.
